Son’s friends all depart at 6am, which is roughly the same time that I leave for my dog show. They all look fairly fresh despite the fact that, judging by all the late night chatter coming from upstairs, no one seems to have got much sleep. They depart into the rain. Oddly despite the inclement weather one of them still leaves behind his coat, which may have been useful. Another leaves behind his glasses, which also may have been useful. Well at least he didn’t see the rain.
Thankfully the weather fines up by the time I get to Shrewsbury for the show where for reasons known only to himself Doggo storms around his first run and puts us on the leader board in 4th. Cue half an hour or so of anxious ring watching to see if we can hang on to it. Anything better than 8th would be a new PB for us at Grade 6. Disappointingly we drop a couple of places but we’re still cracking open our lunchtime soup and toasting our 6th place.
So same regime before next week’s show then, that nine mile warm-up yesterday obviously did him good. L reckons it may have had something to do with the puppy food (we’re out of Doggo’s own food), pasta and pork scratching combo he had last night for tea. Thankfully being forced to spend the night in the pub didn’t seem to impede my handling.
Everything else is a bit of an anticlimax after that. We get another clear round in the afternoon but I think Doggo peaked earlier and we mess one run up on the weaves but it was a real swine of a course.
Still jubilant we head home to L, where it's going to be hard not to crack open yet another beer to celebrate.
